Now that you have managed your interview process, how will it work when that desired job offer comes your way? It will happen, and the next section, on accepting a job offer, will recommend how to make this important decision work for your personal, career and financial goals.
Stage IV
Accepting a Job Offer
After all your hard work, it appears you are going to be getting that exciting job offer! Letâs discuss how to handle this wonderful next step in your life.
Case Studies:
Hyun, a financial manager from Korea
Hyun was excited to be offered a good job by a financial services company. She called her mentor to ask if she should accept the offer. Together, they reviewed all the components of the offer: the salary, the benefits including insurance and paid time off (PTO) for sick days, holidays, and vacation. The salary was extremely low compared to similar jobs she saw on www.salary.com and other job salary websites as well as low in terms of what she was expecting. Still, this job was with a good company and was a return to her finance industry experience after her move to the U.S.
Another concern was that the days off listed in the job offer were extremely limited and would make it difficult for her to visit her family in Korea in the next year. We suggested she get back to the company with a strongly positive response about wanting to accept the job and ask if they would consider raising the salary by a certain amount to be more in line with what she was expecting to receive as well as ask that they grant her five more paid days off annually. She also re-stated that she was looking forward to starting work for them in the coming weeks. After waiting a few nervous days, their HR person wrote back that they could raise the salary a small amount but not the dollar increase requested, and they could add three additional paid days off and two unpaid days annually. Hyun immediately wrote back that she was excited to accept the offer and to begin working.
Gaman, an IT manager from India
Gaman had been searching for a technical position for almost a year. He had been in second and third rounds of interviews but ultimately was not the final candidate. He was depressed and frustrated. Finally, two companies expressed interest, and he made it to the final rounds. One company made him a job offer but the salary was lower than expected. The benefits were good. He discussed with an advisor friend whether he should accept the offer as is or ask for more salary before accepting. He decided that because he really wanted to accept the job and start working, he would not ask for more dollars in salary but would ask if it would be possible to have a six-month salary review instead of a one-year review and if he could have three extra paid vacation days annually. The company came back agreeing to an earlier-than-usual salary review date and the three additional vacation days annually.
